Objective The aim of the course is to show students how to create websites both for personal use and for businesses. The course is split into two modules with the first concentrating on the theory of website design and the second creating websites using a web design program. Students should preferably have access to Macromedia Dreamweaver as the practical exercises will be shown using Dreamweaver MX2004 (a trial 30-day version can be downloaded from the course pages). However, any webdesign programme can be used, but the use of a CMS (content managment system) to complete the final project is not acceptable.
Content Background of the Internet, theory of website design, what makes a good website, using a web design program, creating images for the web, uploading files to a web server, directory structures. There will be a project where students will create a website for a fictional or existing company. All texts on the site will be made in English.
Method of study Students will follow the course virtually via Moodle and all necessary material will be available on-line.
Assessment On-line exercises relating to theory, active participation in discussions, completed website in accordance with course instructions.

Prerequisite It is necessry that students have good computer skills, are familiar with ftp, and possibly some experience of creating web pages. The course is not recommended for 1st-year students. Students will also need to be able to publish pages to a web server (preferably their own university server) and so therefore have web server allocated space.
